Because of our prestige and history, LawSoc is able to work closely with the most reputable law firms in the world, providing our members with excellent career and networking opportunities from day one.

Thanks to its kind sponsors, LawSoc is also able to provide the biggest and most frequent socials across campus at the cheapest prices. LawSoc also has the best sports teams on campus. Our basketball, rugby, hockey, netball, volleyball, and football teams, are a force to be reckoned with every weekend. Most importantly, LawSoc is a channel of support for its members and the wider community. As well as participating in a charitable events, from teaching children to running marathons, the LawSoc Adoption Scheme is one of the most longstanding and successful internal mentoring schemes at the University, laying testament to the belief that LawSoc is, in essence, one big family.

President’s Address

Dear All,

Welcome to the official University of Nottingham Law Society website. I am Luca Williams, your Law Society President, extending the warmest of welcomes to you on behalf of our society.

We are the most active student society on campus, with over 1000 members from both Law and Non-Law degree backgrounds. In the county of Nottinghamshire, we are the only society that has solidified and continues to build upon relationships with the biggest law firms in the world.

The Society is run by a committee of 15, ranging from myself, to our Social Secretaries, Careers Officer, Sports Secretary, Charities Officer, International Representative and Non-Law representative, to name a few. No matter what your interest is in joining the society, there is someone to offer advice and support and ultimately guide you through our plethora of opportunities.

To our members, new and returning, the Law Society provides the perfect blend of opportunities to engage in the multitude of careers events hosted by us whilst also having the chance to relax alongside your degree with the biggest and most distinguished socials on campus from river cruises to our grand Winter and Summer Balls.

The society also boasts numerous sports teams that are some of the best and most competitive on campus, including rugby, hockey, netball, basketball and football teams. Our teams will not just be competing in IMS leagues this year, but also against other universities’ law societies at our prestigious varsity events.

It is important not to forget that our members and committee owe a duty of care to those around us and our planet. Our Charity officer has helped form a charity partnership for the upcoming academic year and fundraising events will be a key feature in our calendar. Importantly, our designated Diversity & Welfare Officer ensures all events are accessible to all and their wellbeing is guaranteed at every turn.

Importantly, please make sure that you follow our social media platforms in order to keep updated on our events and opportunities.

Over the past few years, the Law Society has been awarded the Activities Officer Award (2018), Best Departmental Society (2015, 2017), Best Welfare and Inclusivity Award (2015, 2016, and 2018), Best Academic Experience (2018, Highly Commended 2017) and Best Society (2012, 2015, Highly Commended 2018) by the University of Nottingham Societies Awards. As well as this, the Law Society has been recognised nationally, being nominated for the National Union of Students’ Best UK Society award and winning Best Law Society 2019 and Most Committed to Increasing Diversity 2020 and 2021 at the Lawcareers.Net University Awards for our Dinner with the City event, our socials and our Diversity Series. Most recently, we won ’Top Grads Society’ for 2023.

I would finally like to thank all our sponsors for their generous support given to our society. I eagerly anticipate working with every one of you in the coming year.

Becoming a member of LawSoc (as we are fondly known as to our members) is one of the most rewarding things you can do as a student at the University of Nottingham, and I look forward to seeing you at our events over the coming year.  Do not be hesitant to come say hi if you see myself or any committee around campus before then!

Best wishes,

Luca Williams

University of Nottingham Law Society President
